Yeah, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is the premier T-Day event here in the city. But the locals have another time-honored tradition: watching the balloons being inflated today on the Upper West Side.
Here's what you need to know:
The streets around the Museum of Natural History is the venue. (FYI It's a perfect day to pop in and see the ginormous Tyrannosaurus Rex; closing time is 5:30 p.m.) Visitors enter the fray at 72nd St. and Columbus Ave. Following security and vaccination checks, you'll be directed toward the viewing gallery at 77th St, making a 3/4 circle of the museum before ending at 81st St. and Central Park West. Once there, you'll be able to see The Pillsbury Doughboy, Snoopy, Sonic the Hedgehog and others grow to full size before your very eyes.
Yes, you must provide proof of vaccination, along with a photo ID...but don't worry, unvaccinated kiddos are welcome. And everyone, vaccinated or not, must wear a mask.
Bring snacks and water for the little ones, as the loop takes at least 45 minutes to complete. And if you want to catch a bite after seeing Papa Smurf grow to full size, you may want to head back downtown. The restaurants in the area will et crazy crowded tonight.
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
