We think our Chinatown here in the city is among the country's finest. The advocacy group Welcome to Chinatown agrees, so they've organized the 88 East Fair, taking place tomorrow and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
COVID-19 has put a dent in many restaurants, businesses and cultural institutions, and, sadly, our Chinatown has not been immune to the economic effects of that dreaded virus. 88 East Fair aims to highlight those businesses, and remind folks that Chinatown is back up and running.
The event will be held at the East Broadway Mall at 88 East Broadway and will be chock full of delicious Chinese food (pork dumplings, anyone?), immersive experiences, and local shopping.
Special experiences include the Behind the Counter Immersive Exhibition, which will tell the stories of local Chinese entrepreneurs through projections, audio interviews and artifacts. Or a visit to an embroidery shop where folk can browse designs only available this weekend.
There's even a Mahjohngg tournament hosted by a drag artist! (Come on, where else would you be able to see that?) Plus a scavenger hunt, in which completed challenges earn points that can be exchanged for various prizes.
All in all, it's a win-win. We help our neighbors and have a great time!
