Jazz Age Lawn Party

August 05, 20242 min read

Life got you down? Don't get in a lather. Just grab some giggle water and all will be copacetic in no time. If you get zozzled, have no fear. There will be plenty of people at the 19th Annual Jazz Age Lawn party to razz you as they pick you up off the dance floor. After all, this celebration of Prohibition-era music, dance, food and dress promises to be the bees knees. Attendees take a trip back in time to one of the most colorful and formative eras in American history.

Governor's Island is the perfect venue for this afternoon of time travel. You can expect the crowd to be diverse, a little buzzed, and down for a good time.

Bring your own food, or purchase a bite from an array of gourmet food trucks. (But bringing in your own booze is a no-no.) Make sure to pack a blanket or beach chair to rest your weary limbs after kicking it in the Charleston dance contest. Then enjoy a glass of rosé, a retro cocktail or a beer while you people-watch.

Entertainment will be provided by Michael Arenella and His Dreamland Orchestra, the world's premier Jazz Age dance orchestra, Queen Esther with The Dreamland Follies--a spectacle evoking the days of Flo Ziegfeld--and more.

So what else is happening? Vintage clothing vendors and artisans, a 1920s motorcar exhibition, dance lessons, petanque and Paper Moon photo booths. Plus croquet, carnival games, a children's parade and a pie contest!

You don't have to dress up in the fashions of the era to attend, but it's strongly encouraged. Hey, why not join in on the fun?

The party takes place on August 10th and 11th from 11 AM to 5 PM. Tickets start at $50; kids 12 and under are free, but they'll still need a reservation for the party, which you can make here.

Check it out!
