The Lovin' Spoonful's classic tune nails it. Summer in the city is filled with a lot of laughter and dripping, seemingly endless sweat (all around, people looking half dead, walking on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head...), plus tons of excitement and anticipation of what's to come (but at night it's a different world, go out and find a girl, come-on come-on and dance all night, despite the heat it'll be all right).
After all, it's New York City. You can never be sure what's going to happen.
The lyrics to the song were written by the 15-year-old younger brother of the band's leader, a Greenwich Village student at the time. The Greenwich Village Society for Historical Preservation took a look into the history of the tune in this piece, which hit Number 1 on the Billboard Charts in 1966. It's a cool read--check it out.
Here's the song to take us into the long, hot weekend:
Enjoy, everyone!
