Real Clothes, Real Lives

October 31, 20241 min read

Celebrities and the upper class have certainly not cornered the market on fashion here in New York City, or anywhere, for that matter.

Real Clothes. Real Lives: 200 Years of What Women Wore is a groundbreaking exhibit a the New York Historical Society featuring everyday women's clothing from the last two centuries. Think psychedelic micro-minis worn by young women in the 60s. Nursing uniforms, McDonald's worker uniforms, the "slenderall," a dress and apron set, popularized by homemakers in the 1940s. (!) You won't find Dior and Givenchy here, but plenty of Wrangler and JC Penney and Eddie Bauer.

The exhibition is broken down into five separate themes: Clothing worn for housework, clothing worn for service work, clothing worn socially, clothing marking female rites of passage and finally, clothing that pushes gender boundaries.

The exhibit lasts through June 22, 2025. Tickets are $24 for adult, $19.00 for seniors, $13.00 for high school and college students, $6 for kids 5-13 and free for those younger.
