A trip on a New York City subway is not like a ride on any old train. There are always, but always, colorful characters. Fashion fans can check out the latest trends; curious types can eavesdrop on lively conversations. Best of all, you'll often find a wide range of music: a killer blues singer, up-and-coming rapper, doo-wop or even a bluegrass fiddler. We once heard an opera singer that brought us to tears on the #1 train near Lincoln Center.

(Okay, the mariachi bands are a bit much...we admit it. Too. Loud.)
