Everyone's seen the Barbie movie, right? If you haven't, you should. Women--and men alike--loved it.
In response to all the Barbiemania, the Museum of Arts and Design at Columbus Circle has put together an exhibition, Barbie: A Cultural Icon, that will run through March 16, 2025.
America's most famous doll is now 65 years old, and the show examines the history of the Barbie franchise and examines its global impact since its inception.
More than 250 vintage dolls will be on display, along with outfits (including the 22 that were sold with the original version), advertisements, life-size fashion designs and more. Era-defining aesthetics like Space Age, psychedelia (Groovy Style!) and disco are represented, along with the seeming endless careers under Barbie's belt. (How many women can say they were both a doctor and a chicken farmer?)
The collection will show how Barbie World has expanded over the years to include different ethnicities and body types, not to mention those careers. She's come a long way since 1992, when a talking Barbie uttered, "Math class is hard," to the horror of feminists around the world.
Barbie's mansion, camper van and cabin in Aspen are all on view, along with a life-size version of Barbie's iconic pink convertible!
Tickets are free for kids 12 and under, and can go up to $20 depending on the date.
