Yup, Memorial Day Weekend is upon us...the official beginning of summer in the city. And this year we're really back.
This Saturday, the 29th, from noon to 4 p.m., head over to the Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden, an 83-acre outdoor venue in Staten Island, for the 5 Boro PicNYC. (I know, I know. It feels like a long way off but it's really just a cool ferry ride away...getting there is half the fun.)
So what can you expect? Ribs, ribs and more ribs, plus vegetarian dishes for our meat-adverse friends, like a grilled carrot hot dog with all the fixings. The event will feature produce grown on-site and feature top chefs from around the country. A Rib King NYC competition will take place, featuring pros like Juicy Lucy, Mable's Smokehouse, Big Papa Smoke'm and Brothers Smokehouse, all from the tri-state area.
Sauces will be available to sample and purchase including Hell's Kitchen Hot Sauce, Coney Island Saucery and BBQ Buddha. (Sadly, Ronnie's famous sauce will not be featured--you have to come to our hotel and maybe he'll bring you a sample!) Local beer and hard cider will also be available, because a girl's gotta drink, doesn't she?
General admission is $55 and includes an all-inclusive food and drink ticket. $85 will up you to VIP status with early entry to meet the chefs and makers and take home a festival t-shirt. Fancy-pants VIP tables ($1250) include eight VIP tickets and designated seating along with the t-shirts. Kids 12 and under are free!
The event will happen rain or shine and yes, masks and social distancing are required.
So bring along a picnic blanket and get ready to chow down and kick off the summer with a bang!
